Improvements to Image Uploading

Written 10/07/08

One of the problems with taking photos with modern digital cameras is that you end up with very big images, both in terms of how much screen space they use and how big the file is. If you want to use the photo on your web site the first is a problem as they tend to far bigger than you want on your web page, and even if you tell the visitor's browser to re-size the image before displaying it the second is a problem for visitors with slow connections.

Traditionally we have therefore advised customers to re-size their images before uploading them to the server using whatever graphics tools they have to hand. We also recommend "sharpening" the image as that usually makes it look better if it's being reduced in size.

Now we've upgrade our Opus content management system to do this for you. So when you select the "Upload an image" option from Opus the screen now looks like this.

Screen shot

The new fields are:

Rotate image
Allows you to rotate the image through 90°, 180°, or 270°.
Resize image
Allows you to re-size the image by checking the box and entering the width in pixels that you want it to be (after any rotation). The image is kept in proportion so the new height is worked out by Opus from the width you specify.
Sharpen image
If checked then the image is "sharped" after being rotated/re-sized.
